Wizard of Oz Family Costumes

Wizard of Oz Family Costumes with instructions and links

This Wizard of Oz family costume theme was a huge hit for our family in 2016. While I shared the photos on Instagram, I somehow never posted them here on the blog. With Halloween just over a week away, I thought it would be fun  to post our Wizard of Oz family costumes for some inspiration.

Family Halloween costumes are one of my favorite family traditions and I hope we can keep them going for as long as possible.

Family Wizard of Oz Halloween Costume

My mom was in town for Halloween last year, so she got to get in on the action.

I wish I had gotten more pictures of Matthew and me, but in all the excitement to trick or treat, all we got was our family photo. I will do my best to explain what we did though!

The Tin Man Costume

Tin Man DIY Costume

Elias definitely won for the most amazing costume. This was the hardest costume I have ever made and I was SO thrilled with how it turned out. I hope a grandchild wears it someday.

I followed this tutorial, but made a few modifications.

  • The most important – buy silver vinyl, don't spray another color like she did. (She says this herself).
  • Use this silver make up for the face. I searched dozens of make up tutorials and was REALLY happy with this one. Definitely worth the $10!
  • Only do joints at the shoulders. Adding the elbows felt really cumbersome on Elias so we went without.
  • Buy a tin man heart. Yes, it's made VERY cheaply, but it really added to the costume.
  • We made an ax with a dowel, cardboard and some silver spray paint, but you can buy one here.

One additional note – this costume is VERY warm. Half way through trick or treating, Elias took off the body portion.

Glenda the Good Witch of the North Costume

Glenda the Good Witch Costume

Adeline's Glenda costume I bought on Amazon because I don't have sewing skills for dresses. I made a HUGE tulle underskirt for it though to really make the dress full (I used 8 yards of pink tulle). I made her wand simply by spray painting a wood wand silver and adding glitter.

Also, pro tip – the crown will arrive a bit bent. Use a hair dryer on it and it was soften out and remove the crease.

Lollipop Guild Member Costume, Our Little Munchkin

Lollipop Guild Costume from the Wizard of IzEzra was going to be the lion, but he hated the lion head so much that I had to, at the very last minute, throw something else together.

The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz

My mom had a witch's costume from a past year and it was perfect for the Wizard of Oz family costume theme. The kids loved having Nana dress up with them! I think this will always be a treasured photo for them.

You can find a similar witch costume here.

Wizard of Oz Scarecrow Costume

For my costume, I bought a long green tunic on Amazon and wore it with brown leggings. I tied rafia to rubber bands to make the straw for my hands and neck. A floppy witch hat worked for the hat and brown make up on my nose!

Wizard of Oz Tornado Costume

For Matthew's costume, we bought 10 yards of black and white tulle. He then popped a tomato cage on his shoulders and we wrapped the tulle around it. This is not something we assembled ahead of time, but rather on the lawn, right before trick-or-treating. People absolutely LOVED it!
