The art of handlettering seems to be gaining in popularity and I can understand why.
Lately I have noticed my creativity begging for a release. Between motherhood and work, I have pushed my creative pursuits to the side these last two years. Sure, I’ve done a few projects here and there, planned parties, etc., but my creative life hasn’t been what it was.
And while I think that seasons in our life are like that (ie: when you have a baby and release a book in the same year), it is important to recognize when the season needs a shift.
I need to get out of winter and into spring, if you will.
Earlier this year, I met Melissa Smith, also known as LissLetters. Melissa has six children and is known around the world for her incredible handlettering. She has a gift for inspiring other women and values the importance of pursuing creativity.
We immediately clicked, chatting about her art, motherhood and faith. (Check out her notes on my Fringe Hours talk.) I have wanted to try creative handlettering for quite some time, but after watching Liss so easily wield a pen, I had to learn. (Seriously, if you don’t follow her on Instagram, you must.)
This week she opened up her popular Freestyle Calligraphy class and I immediately signed up. I’m sharing it here because I think it might be something you might have interest in.
- Maybe you have long admired handlettering, but not sure how to begin.
- Maybe you are like me and need a creative boost.
- Maybe you need something this summer that isn’t about your kids, but about you.
- Maybe it has been a long time since you invested in something just for you.
Liss’s five-week Freestyle Calligraphy class is $97. The class includes five weeks of video instruction (Liss’s Australian accent is such a delight to listen to), worksheets and a private Facebook group. I know $97 might feel like a lot, especially when you are spending it on yourself. I had been planning to sign up for several months and still second-guessed myself about it.
When I mentioned it to Matthew, he kindly said to me, “Baby, that’s a great deal. It’s five weeks of classes and it is something you will love.”
He was right. And he’d probably say the same to you.
Liss’s class is only open to sign-up for a few more days (until Sunday, June 5.) Will you join me? I’m already in the Facebook group. I’ll be sharing my progress on Instagram and maybe here too.
Once you sign up for the Freestyle Calligraphy class, you’ll have access to the videos forever (so if now isn’t the perfect season, its still worth signing up). Moreover, the supplies are just $20-$30, so not too bad for a new hobby.
I’m really excited to take this class, not only because it is a creative practice I want to learn, but because I know that when I invest in my creativity, it positively impacts every other area of my life.
It will do the same for you.
