I received this book in a book swap a few months ago and knew nothing about it except that one of my favorite historical fiction authors, Kathleen Grissom, endorsed it. The book takes place in 1897 and is about a woman named Anita Hemmings, who passes as a white woman, though her parents are African American. Based on a true stories, I absolutely loved this book. It broke my heart, captivated me, and left me wanting to read more about this period. An awful part of American history, I loved this book. 4.5 stars
