Despite being on book deadline and having a KILLER work month, I somehow managed to start the year finishing 6 month. Truthfully, reading helped save my sanity. It is my favorite kind of self-care. I read so many 4-5 star books, you’ll likely have A LOT to add to your TBR list. I’m so happy to share these books with you!
I received this book from Book of the Month and picked up because it's not long and I thought I would be able to squeeze it in at the end of 2017. However, I didn't really connect with the characters and it ended up taking me a week to finish. Written as a series of journal entries about a daughter who goes home to help with her dad who is in the later stages of dementia, the book has endearing qualities, but I just didn't love it.
I read this 600+ page book in three days. It consumed me in ways only the best books do. The story of Cyril Avery from the 40s through present day, every chapter jumps seven years. Cyril is gay and reading his story of growing up, grappling with this during a time where gay people were not accepted, the AIDS crisis in America, etc. was a gripping, brutal, poignant read. This book is not for everyone, but I give it 5+ stars. Cyril is a character I will never forget.More info →
By the author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Jamie Ford takes on a sweeping story between the early 1900s World's Fair and the 1960s. The story of a Chinese orphan, sold at the World's Fair to an owner of a brothel, his life is forever changed in unimaginable ways. A heart-breaking, yet beautiful story of loss, love, hope and redemption. 4 starsMore info →
This is one of those books that will stick with you long after you finish it. Set after a flu pandemic that wipes out 99% of the population in a matter of days, Station Eleven flips back and forth before and after "the collapse." I fell in love with many of the characters and thought the storytelling was brilliant. Fans of The Walking Dead, Dark Matter and Ready Player One will love this book. 4.5 starsMore info →
I absolutely loved the Bush twins' memoir. With stories from their childhood through present day, I found the audio book to be delightful.
