Tonight is the long-awaited season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead. Matthew & I are huge fans of the show and it’s our wedding anniversary today, so we thought, what better way to celebrate than to have a premiere party with a few friends?!
Whether you are planning to enjoy the show quietly at home or with a few friends, I thought I would share this easy, blood-inspired menu. You could easily make these items with food you have in your kitchen or a quick run to the grocery store.
The star of the meal is homemade tomato basil soup. This recipe from my friend Julie Hunt is easy to make and a winner every time.
To accompany the soup we plan to serve salad and yummy grilled cheese sandwiches, made with sourdough bread, sharp cheddar and colby jack cheeses.
Obviously, we wanted red drinks, so I bought cherry and pomegranate Italian sodas to serve. I’m think I’m going to pick up mason jars to customize with guest names + “Don’t open, dead inside” on them. These will be the perfect accent/place card on the table.
“Lucille” chocolate dipped pretzel rods: I really wanted something that tied closely to the premiere episode, which centers around who dies by Lucille, Negan’s bat. I came up with dipping pretzel rods in chocolate and sprinkling them with chocolate sprinkles.
Once the chocolate hardened, I melted some red candy melts (from Michaels) and drizzled the rods with “blood”.
I’m so excited by how they turned out.
I also made these red velvet cheesecake brownies. It was my first time making red velvet from scratch and they turned out incredible. (Of course we had to sample a few.) I doubled the recipe and used a 9×13 pan. The perfect mix of blood and brains.
I hung this Zombie door poster in our kitchen (seen in the above photo).
I made popcorn “food rations” bags for guests to enjoy during the party or to take home.
For the table, I cut rectangles of burlap for placemats atop a black tablecloth. I also got a foam Zombie head at Michaels for $3.50 that I painted quickly this morning (took about 15 minutes). I think he’s the perfect centerpiece!
