Motherhood Monday: When the Past Repeats Itself

by jessicaturner on August 20, 2012

This past weekend the kids and I have been visiting my family in WI. This gave Matthew a few days to prepare for being out of the country for 10 days and us a great way to end the summer.

One of the trip highlights was taking Elias fishing at a small pond that my parents used to take my sister and me to as kids.

It’s not a well-known fishing hole, but with every cast, you catch a little fish.

Every time.

It is perfect for kids.

I used to love going there.

And seeing Elias fishing from the same place I did 25 years ago, with my Dad gently showing him how to cast and reel in a fish was one of those circle of life, aha moments for me.

It’s incredible to see your kids make memories that are so similar to your own childhood memories, isn’t it? For me, it is an unexpected joy of parenting.

Have you had those moments in your parenting journey? What were they?

We took our kids to an amusement park on Saturday (Beech Bend in Bowling Green, Ky.–small and great for little kids) and standing with my husband, feeling such joy just in seeing our daughter’s joy in riding a little ride, I just turned and asked him, “did you ever imagine parenthood would be as amazing as it is?”

I felt this way when we spent many summer afternoons at the local pool and when we went on a beach vacation with my whole family. I find myself wanting my kids to experience places and activities that I loved as a kid.

I love these moments. For me, it was this summer when we went to Arizona to visit our families – watching my boys make and decorate cupcakes with my mother in-law, and then the boys make cookies with my mom. I always loved baking with my mom. It was such a sweet time.
