This is BIG!

by jessicaturner on March 5, 2009

I started scrapbooking when Matthew and I met in 2003. My mom bought my sister and I each a box of supplies for Christmas, thinking we may get into this hobby that was rapidly gaining popularity in Wisconsin. A month later I met Matthew and had the perfect reason to try it out – and I was hooked. My style was really simple – gluing pictures on a page and maybe adding a sticker or two. Here’s one of my first pages – don’t laugh. The scallop cutting and stickers really make it, huh? :)
I entered the CK Hall of Fame in 2006 (the Hall of Fame is one of the biggest contests in the scrapbooking world – to be named a Hall of Famer is a big deal). I didn’t win. I really wasn’t good enough. But that doesn’t matter because you see, that contest really pushed me to become a better scrapbooker and try new things. I started reading books, going to conferences, taking classes and I flourished. Scrapbooking became magical for me. As much as I loved the tactile process of playing with paper and all of the products, I really fell in love with telling my story, and the stories of my loved ones. It is then that I believe that my style really developed. I started teaching in Nashville and really became passionate about wanting others to chronicle their stories.

In several posts I have mentioned that I have been working on a big scrapbooking project. I am SO excited to finally get to share what that is.

I am developing a Project Now class for Big Picture Scrapbooking called Don’t Blink: Scrapbooking Your Baby’s First Year.

I am so excited. SOOOO excited. This is a BIG dream come true for me on a lot of levels. I have incredible admiration and respect for Big Picture Scrapbooking. One of the founders, Stacy Julian, is a friend of mine. This is very humbling because she is such an inspiring visionary and one of the most creative, fun, and talented scrapbookers in the world. And I get to work with her as I develop my class. Moreover, she loves my class concept and believes in me. WOW.

I love to teach and it is such a dream that I get to be a teacher with one of the most respected scrapbooking class programs in the world. And it is pretty much the only way I can teach each of you – so cool!

This class will be a Project Now class meaning that you will pay a modest fee (less than $15) and have access to the Don’t Blink classroom. In it will be audio files from me, PDF downloads of worksheets and inspiration for scrapbooking your baby’s first year, tons of layouts to inspire you, links to my favorite products and more.

Don’t Blink was dreamed up because so many people ask me, how do you have time to scrapbook? This class will empower its students to make time to scrapbook their baby – whether he was just born or is in fifth grade. It will likely launch in mid-late May. I hope that you will consider taking this class. It would be such an honor -especially since I can’t personally scrapbook with each of you. This is the next best thing. :)

This is going to be BIG.

How amazingly timely this post is!!!! I have a precious friend who is an awesome scrapbook-er, and she gifted me (just yesterday) with the most AMAZING little scrapbook for my upcoming Disney trip!!! I was floored and may have caught the scrapbooking bug! I was so excited about it that I took pictures of every page and posted about it on my blog…you should see it!

I am going to look into the class you are talking about it….maybe it would be a good introduction for me since my baby just turned one (and I have YET to crack her baby book…..such is the life of a 3rd child)!

Thanks for all the inspiration you give me (and all of us)!

P.S. Did the teething tablets help?

This is very exciting! I have been a lurker for a long time, commenting maybe a time or two. I am VERY overwhelmed thinking about scrapbooking my baby photos. My baby is just six weeks and I already have so many pictures. I can’t wait to take this class. You are such an inspiration for me. I went out and bought your camera b/c I loved your photos. Now I just need to get busy scrapbooking.

P.s. Elias is so stinkin cute!

That is awesome news for you! I too am a huge fan of Stacy Julian and her message. I think you’ll be a perfect BPS instructor. I enjoy reading your blog and and your outlook on motherhood and how scrapbooking fits into it. I have 3boys myself, with the youngest being 13 months old today. Congratulations!

I have to laugh, because those decorative scissors were a big thing when I started scrapbooking too and cringe when I look at those photos I cropped with those stupid scissors! LOL! Congratulations!!

Heather March 5, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Hi Jessica
Consider me signed up! I can’t wait. I will be working on my 4th baby’s album and hopefully be able to make some albums for my other babies!
So exciting! I can’t wait!!!

Laci March 5, 2009 at 5:11 pm

I have been reading your blog for quite some time now and I love all of your scrapbooking/memory-making ideas and projects. I will definitely be interested in this class because I am intrigued by scrapbooking and have my first baby due in August! Sounds like fun :)

Mandy and Jack March 5, 2009 at 5:33 pm

That’s so exciting, Jessica! Congratulations!

I love your “bad” scrapbook page!! I love looking through my old “terrible” scrapbooks that I made when I first started. I also started when my husband and I first started dating, and some of it is just awful! Sticker vomit, clashing colors, you name it. But I’m so glad I started!

I’ve thought about redoing these pages so many times but it’s just fun to see how far I’ve come and how much my style has changed over the years, so I’ll probably keep them the way they are forever. :) It’s all about the memories and the stories anyway!!

Nicole March 5, 2009 at 6:10 pm

That’s great! I am excited to learn more! I just did a scrapbook with page layouts done for a friend who is due with their first baby next month so all they have to do is plop the pictures in and journal. It got the bug back in me to start scrapping again and I want to start with my son’s baby album which means 2 years of catch-up. I’ll be checking in to see when your class is available.

Courtney Marler March 5, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Awesome! I have a Kindergartener, but love the fact that you are encouraging even the slackbookers out here (who, me?) who never really finished the first year. =) Congrats to you!

Patti March 5, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Congrats, that is so exciting!!

gitz March 5, 2009 at 10:03 pm

This may be big in a Big Picture sort of way, but this is HUGE and ENORMOUS in an exciting kind of way.

And GINORMOUS in an i’m-proud-of-you kind of way :)

Debbie March 5, 2009 at 11:27 pm

I have followed your blog for a long time, since before Elias was born. I just love it. And you are partially responsible for me getting back into scrapbooking.

My baby is 16 (how does that happen?)but we had our first Grandson July 31st. I wondered if your class could be used for basic scrapbook ideas and tips or if I would need to be scrapping for an itty bitty?

Have a Blessed day,

elana March 6, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Congrats on your class – this’ll be perfect for me. My little guy turns 1 next week.

Mary @ Giving Up On Perfect March 7, 2009 at 2:57 am

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is SO cool! I love scrapbooking (and also started with scalloped scissors and stickers!), and I think it’s so important to help people understand that you CAN do it simply. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Can’t wait to hear more about your project!

amydc March 7, 2009 at 7:37 am

Congrats Jessica. How fun!!

Matt and Cristin March 7, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Jessica! I am SO excited about this! I am struggling with scrapbooking. I have a newborn and just can’t seem to really do this and have it look cool. :) Thanks so much! Can’t wait!
