Churched Week Kick-Off

by jessicaturner on October 6, 2008

This week I will be celebrating the release of Matthew’s latest book (and first hardback), churched. Check in every day for special giveaways and all things related to churched.

The book’s official release date is tomorrow! To those of you who have pre-ordered it, thank you! We are soooo excited. Early feedback has been incredibly positive. The book is funny, thoughtful, faithful and just plain great. You don’t have to have grown up in the church to appreciate this book. Matthew’s writing has mass appeal, making it perfect for you and all your friends. :)

Okay, enough gushing from the proud wife.

Today I would like to bring you two things:

One- a giveaway! You know how I love a good giveaway. Simply leave a comment on this post and I will randomly select three people to receive autographed copies of churched. And, if there are more than 300 comments, I will probably give away more books (since I know the author.) One comment per person please.

Two – an excerpt. Just to give you a taste of Matthew’s writing.

prelude

The man’s shoulder was inked with a tattoo of Jesus breathing fire out of his mouth, which I concluded to mean one of two things: the man was going to offer me the opportunity to be born again in the hot fumes of a firebreathing Messiah or he planned to kill me and make it necessary for me to be born again.

Like any “good” American, I had already been born again–since childhood I’d pretty much been on shuffle and repeat–but I still feared either scenario. I couldn’t stop looking at the man’s shoulder. His Jesus was green and faded, and because of a small mole, it appeared as though my Lord and Savior had a foreign object dangling from one nostril. Then the man looked at me from the opposite end of the sauna, tightened the towel around his waist, and said, “How are you, man? My name is Jim.”

I didn’t say anything at first. His question sort of paralyzed me. Would he pull a small Gideons Bible from somewhere underneath that towel, look up a bunch of frightful verses in Romans, and then ask me to get down on my hands and knees and repeat after him? I wouldn’t do it. Not in a sauna. Not just wearing a towel. Besides, I had sworn off being born again again in this decade.

“Hello.” I spoke carefully, still not ready to trust a person who had a flaming-tongue Messiah on an appendage. “My name is Matthew.”

“Good to meet you, Matthew. Man, I don’t know about you, but I have had the craziest day.” Jim stared at me as he talked. I think he was making sure I paid attention. “I didn’t even work out today. I just came right to the sauna.” He stretched his arms and then massaged his left shoulder, pinching Jesus’s face with his fingers.

My husband already pre-ordered the book but it would be great to have an autographed copy! Then we could both read it at the same time, and then give one away.

BTW, my husband was brought up in a Southern Baptist home, and I know he’s going to be able to really relate to Matthew’s experiences in Churched. And that it seems to be quite humurous will be perfect for my often sarcastic hubbie. :)

My daughter took a bunch of bookmarks to church last night(it’s revival) she came home with some of the bookmarks, but some even more wonderful news… Last night she accepted Jesus into her heart. Yay. I am so excited. Anyway, I’m sorry, I just had to get that off my chest this morning. I am sure you guys will hit 1,000 today. Love the punkin pic. Have a great day.

Just read the excerpt from Churched, and could totally relate…having been “born again” every summer during my childhood while at summer camp. I would love to read Churched as I am sure my husband would also.

Found your blog through Angie’s. I find you and your husband both hilarious. Because of that, I HAD to order one of his earlier books–Provocative Faith. Love it. I would love to read Churched as well. Thanks for the great giveaway. The photo of Elias with the pumpkins turned out adorable by the way!

Okay I’ve never done this before (try to get a giveaway on a blog) but after reading part of the book on the blog I really want to read this book. Hmmm maybe I can get our churches book store to carry it. Hadn’t thought of that. Really like what I say of Matt’s writing.
