A Detox/Migraine Update

by jessicaturner on March 30, 2007

Yesterday I took this photo while parked in traffic on Belle Meade Blvd. – one of the nation’s wealthiest streets. The houses are amazing… but this little plot of land has no houses. I loved the magnolia tree in the forefront and the rest of the trees hidden by the fog. Very cool.

I was on my way to see my detox doctor – Asa. Yesterday began week 10 of my 10 week detox. I still have headaches. They have not lessened in severity or decreased in number. In fact, a lot of the time they seem worse. Needless to say, I am frustrated and ready to quit. I have expressed this frustration multiple times with Asa, but to no real conclusion. He just keeps saying things like, “I think this is going to work,” and “I want to see you well more than you do.” No you don’t. Give me a break.

But yesterday, I saw a glimmer of hope. After ten weeks of no results (except me losing a lot of weight), and 6 weeks of me complaining about no results, Asa admitted being frustrated. He said that he is very used to seeing headache patients see results in four weeks and thinks we are missing something chemical because structurally I am doing well. (Yes, clearly we are missing something…) Asa also said that he is willing to call every specialist in the country and continue researching as much as he has been to find an answer. He doesn’t want to give up yet. He then asked if I would be willing to try a few alternative options (as if what we haven’t been doing isn’t alternative enough in my book). Out of the small glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe there is more to try that may be the answer, I said yes. Let’s face it, we are running out of options.

One new diagnosis that Asa is pursuing is that I have a serotonin deficiency. This is one of the first things he has said that makes logical sense to me… the only migraine drugs that work are serotin increasers (imitrex) and my headaches are often worse when I have PMS – when women’s serotonin is naturally lower. After googling for a bit I found that serotonin is actually very commonly linked to migraines.

So, for the next three days I am to fast and take a couple new vitamins – leaving my old ones temporarily to the side. Nothing to eat or drink but water and chicken broth. I have fasted before, but not for three days since my migraines became chronic daily… not eating does quite a number on my system/head, and I am not excited about this. Please be in prayer for me these three days… for I will need the strength. And pray that God works a miracle and cures this daily pain I have been in for years.

You will be in my prayers Jessica. I know it is frustrating. Although I never had daily migraines I did have daily headaches and am so thankful I have found a way that helps me no longer have near as many.

Perhaps you have already tried this. But do you know if your DHA and EPA levels are down? I used to have really bad headaches and that’s what was wrong with me. I started taking fish oils that have DHA and EPA written on the bottle and within a few days my headaches disappeared. I learned that the brain feeds off of poly- and monounsaturated fats, which is found in that certian fish oil, and I didn’t have enough in my body. Maybe you can discuss it with your doctor or something! You’re in my prayers!

Are you sure Asa isn’t a quack? He sounds like the medical equalivent of the preachers who preach the prosperity gospel.
